My homelab is where I get hands-on with the systems behind modern software. It is where I can explore technology hands-on and learn from the result. It gives me a controlled place to see how systems behave when things change, fail, recover, and need to be understood.

Kubernetes and GitOps

Operating a multi-node Kubernetes environment and using GitOps helps me understand deployments, configuration drift, and the discipline of repeatable change.

Observability

Working with OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, and Alertmanager builds my intuition for logs, metrics, traces, alerts, and the questions they can answer.

Reliability in practice

Backups, monitoring, incident notes, resource limits, and recovery exercises make the tradeoffs of reliable systems tangible.

Secure foundations

Using encrypted configuration, access controls, and intentional network boundaries keeps security part of the learning, not an afterthought.

That personal experience makes me more curious and more useful at work. It helps me connect a customer question to the systems, signals, and people behind it.

The point of the hobby

Trying and failing is not a detour from learning. It is how I learn.
